1. a) What do you understand by the following terms.
(i) Drainage analysis (1 mark)
(ii) Catchment area (1 mark)
(iii)Divide (1 mark)
b) Examine the limitations of Qualitative approaches in the study of basin systems.
(2 marks)
c) Study the map provided East Africa 1:50,000, KENYA, LONGONOT sheet 133/4
series, V731, edition 7 – D.O. S. 1975.
(i) Using the tracing provided, delimit the drainage basin with the base level at grid
reference 062940 and assign orders to all segments of the stream systems
(9 marks)
(ii) Calculate the basin area. (3 marks)
(iii)Determine the drainage density (4 marks)
(iv) Determine the stream frequency (4 marks)
d) In one drainage basin there are 308 first order segments and 102 second order
segments and in another there are 120 first order segments and 30 second order
streams. Compute the bifurcation ratios for the two basins and comment on the results.

2. a) Define a “derived map”. (3 marks)
b) Citing relevant examples, explain the importance of “basic mapping” to the
development of any country. (10 marks)
c) Using illustrations, explain the function of ‘Standard sheet line’ in topographical
mapping in Kenya. (7 marks)
3. a) Compare aerial photographs and paper maps as methods of representation of
geographical data. (10 marks)
b) Explain the advantages and limitations of aerial photography in geographical
investigations (10 marks)
