1. Discuss the response of authors you have studies in this course to the socio-cultural, political,
economic and environmental changes experienced the three East African countries.
2. Using any two short stories from the anthology, Half a Day and Other Stories, discuss the
theme discrimination and female oppression.
3. Illustrate the use of symbol and irony in Marjorie Oludhe’s Coming to Birth,
4. With reference to Ngugi wa Thiongo’s The River Between illustrate how the writer presents
the twin ideas of alienation and cultural conflict.
5. Margaret Ogola’s The River and the Source is a story about female resilience to patriarchal
dominance and triumph over cultural stereotypes. Respond to this statement with close
reference to the text.
6. Paulina’s systematic growth in Coming to Birth is not comparable to Akoko Obanda’s fight
for equality in Margaret Ogola’s The River and the Source. Discuss the validity of this
statement, citing examples from the two texts.
