SECTION 1: (30 MARKS)
1. ‘In a reaction against the colonial experience, writing from East Africa has continued to be
preoccupied with its indigenous sources and has attempted to break from the colonial
grammar by infusing its narratives with local idioms.’ Discuss with reference to any novel or
short stories you have read in this course. (30 marks)
2. Discuss feminist and gender issues in East African literature with reference to either Arac
de Nyeko’s or Margaret Ogola’s or Goretti Kyomuhendo’s or Elieshi Lema’s or Grace
Ogot’s works. (30 marks)

3. Comment on how either Ngugi wa Thiongo in A Grain of Wheat or Oginga Odinga in Not
Yet Uhuru or Nurrundin Farah in Sardines depict (the struggle for) independence as a drama
of betrayal, ironic reversals, unfulfilled promise or total failure. (20 marks)

4. Either a) Discuss how fact and fiction are intertwined in MacGoye’s Coming to Birth
(20 marks) Or b) With reference to any of MacGoye’s novels discuss the suggestion that she
weaves local idioms and historical references into her narratives to comment on historical and
political events in Kenya and to forge new identities for her characters. (20marks)
5. Discuss the theme of slavery in East Africa with reference to either Francis Bok’s Escape
from slavery, or Tippu Tip’s The Story of His Career in Central Africa Narrated from
His Own Accounts By Dr. Heinrich Erode or Adrian Onyando’s Heart of Wilderness.
