Read the following case and answer question one (a)
Mark is afresh BCOM graduate from Kenyan University. He has secured himself a Chief
Executive position in a media size organization. He believes that participative management is the
best way to enhance upward communication in an organization. He therefore has put in palace an
open door policy in a bid to rely on the bureaucratic chain of command all the time. Infact, he
finds it easy to communicate directly to the persons concerned than through the supervisor. The
system seems appealing to the subordinate staff, since they can see the Chief Executive at any
time without any appointment. It is however frowned upon by other members of the
management and supervisory staff. Who have reservations about the system of communication?

QUESTION 1
a) What danger might the CEO be exposing himself to despite the fact that he wants to be so
close to his employees? (10 marks)
b) Feedback is gaining importance in almost all walks of life. Describe the major tool of
giving feedback in an organizational situation. (3marks)
c) Discuss the characteristics of this tool. (10 marks)
d) The general manager of your company (Illustrative Co. Ltd) has asked you to provide a
report discussing the marketing strategies for the launch of a new product – “exclusive
Yoghurt”.
Draft the report using the memo format. (7 marks)

a) You have recently hired a secretary and are in the process of training him to work
according to your requirements. Instruct him on how to take down minutes. Inform him
of the three types of minutes. ( 8 marks)
b) Supposing you are the head of a marketing division and you are to conduct a meeting in
two weeks time. Call your secretary and issue instruction concerning the specifications of
the agenda. (4marks)
c) Discuss the roles of a chairperson in a meeting. (6 marks)
d) Define a meeting. (2 marks)

c) Informal communication merits some importance in an organization, but formal
communication is still the preferred mode. Explain with example why you would support
