Question 1
1.1 Discuss the differences between inflectional morphemes and derivational morphemes.
(8 marks)
1.2 Discuss how words are derived through Conversion and Affixation. Provide adequate
examples of the various changes in word class as a result of this process. (16 marks)
1.3 What is Syntax? (2 marks)
1.4 Discuss Phrase Structure Rules and show, with the use of examples, how they can be
used to resolve structural ambiguity. (10 marks)

Section B: Answer any TWO questions

Question 2
Form a new word from the words given and name and describe the word formation
process used in each instance. (10 marks)
2.1 Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
2.2 urine, analysis
2.3 A comb
2.4 facsimile
2.5 bitter, sweet
2.6 What are Graeco-Latin combining forms? (1 mark)
Each of these words is a compound containing at least one bound Graeco-Latin
combining form. Identify a meaning for each such combining form, and provide
another word that contains it.
For example: octahedron
Octa- means eight (1 mark) also occurs in octagon (½ mark)
-hedron means surface ( 1 mark) also in polyhedron ( ½ mark)

5.2 Differentiate between phrasal categories and lexical categories and provide two
examples of each category. 8 marks
