1. (a) Outline three basic principles of counseling that make the definition of psychology.
(6 marks)
(b) Definition of psychology evolved over the years from the study of the soul to its
present definitions . Trace the changes to present day definition of psychology.
(4 marks)
(c) Discuss four distinctions between guidance and counseling (4 marks)

2. You have been invited by the “maendeleo ya wanaume” chairman to address a gathering
of men on the topic of abuse. In your presentation highlight
(a) What is abuse? (2 marks)
(b) Give three causes of abuse (6 marks)
(c) After your presentation, a man comes to you for counseling, outline specific skills and
techniques you will employ (4 marks)

3. (a) Discuss four ways in which a counselor can remain relevant in his field of
specialization. (8 marks)
(b) “Some people have argued that theories are of little importance, that they exist
primarily to boost the egos of the theory builders and that they don’t have much
influence on the actual experience of counseling” Discuss by referring to at least
four theories. (12 marks)

4. (a) As a counselor you obtain information about an individual which must not be
communicated to others unless certain important conditions are met. Discuss four
such conditions. (8 marks)
(b) Discuss five ethical issues in counseling (10 marks)
(c) Name two types of counseling services (2 marks)


5. (a) You have been invited to in-service teachers on functions of a school counselor give
at least five functions in your presentation. (10 marks)
(b) Evaluate peer counseling programmes in your county. (10 marks)


6. (a) What are the advantages of using group counseling over individual counseling?
(10 marks)
(b) Counseling is not taken seriously by the Kenyan public comment. (14 marks)
