INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATE
1.All questions are compulsory.
2.Read all questions carefully and answer accordingly.
3.Speaking during exam time will lead to cancellation of result.
4.Wrong numbering will lead to deduction of marks.

Q.1.Give two examples of physical change. (2 marks)
Q.2.State two differences between chemical change and nuclear change.(2 marks)
Q.3.Describe the evidence that shows that molecules in gases and liquids are in a state of motion. (2 marks)
Q.4.Why can the pressure of a gas not be reduced to zero by cooling.(5 marks)
Q.5.State two basic assumptions of kinetic theory of gases. (2 marks)
Q.6.State what is meant by diffusion and explain how it is affected by heating.(4 marks)
Q.7.Using the kinetic theory of gases, explain why the pressure of a gas increases when the gas is heated at constant volume.(5 marks)
Q.8.Describe with the aid of a clearly labelled diagram an experiment to verify the pressure law.(5 marks)
Q.9. A narrow uniform glass contains air enclosed by a 10cm thread of mercury. When the tube is held vertical, the air column is 600mm long. When tilted slightly, the air column is 679mm long.
The temperature is the same in both cases.
a)Give the reason for the differences in length of the air column for the two positions.
(2 marks)
b) Determine the atmospheric pressure at the place.(Density of mercury=0.0136gcm)
(5 marks)
Q.10.A tube contains a gas enclosed with a thread of mercury. The tube was placed horizantally in water bath. The initial temperature of the water was 20 degree celsus and the length of the gas column was 25cm.Determine the temperature at which length of the air column would be 30cm (Assume the pressure does not change) (5 marks)
Q.11.Show that the density of a fixed mass of a gas at constant temperature is directly proportional to the pressure. (5 marks)
Q.12.A gas in a container has a volume V-1,pressure P-1 and temperature T-1. Find the new pressure if the gas is emptied into a container four times the volume of the original and is cooled to half the initial temperature.(5 marks)
