This question paper is divided into three sections A,B and C.
Answer THREE questions, ONE from each section
SECTION A (24 MARKS)
1. Critically compare and contrast the education system of ancient Sparta and Athens. What lessons can a modern African country learn from the two ancient systems of education?
2. Explain the lasting contributions of the religious reformation to the development of western formal education.
3. Assess the main ideas of John Amos Comenius on education showing how they could be utilized in teaching.
SECTION B (23 MARKS)
4. Compare and contrast British and French education policies in Africa and in the colonial period and assess their impact on the development of education.
5. Critically comment on the view that, "compared to western formal education, African indigenous education would not have fastened the kind of scientific and technological advancement found in Africa today"
6. "Education for human resource development". Discuss the accuracy of this statement with reference to education policies in African countries between 1960 and 1975.
SECTION C (23 MARKS)
7. Discuss Christian missionaries educational policies in Kenya up to 1920.
8. Discuss how the recommendations of the Phelps-Stokes Commission influenced the development of education in Kenya in the inter-war period.
9. Discuss the challenges in democratization of higher education in Kenya since 1980.
