Question One
a) Science has a tradition of critical thinking about the natural world with the aim of understanding how nature works. In fact, scientists are sometimes referred to as natural philosophers. Nature is widely understood to provide the basis for most scientific ideas. With this in mind, please write brief notes while explaining from a scientific point of view, your understanding of the following natural phenomena:-

i) Tsunami
ii) Photosynthesis

b) Distinguish between the following:-
i) Hypothesis and theory

c) Which of the following statements are supported by deductive reasoning and which by inductive reasoning? Please indicate clearly.
i) The sun will rise tomorrow
ii) The sum of the square of the sides of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse
iii) Only male deer have antlers
iv) If A=B and B=C then A=C
v) The net force acting on a body equals its mass times its acceleration

d) Discuss the importance of observation and measurement in the working arrangements used by scientists.
e) Entomology and chemistry are distinct lines of study in science. Carefully define them highlighting the various sections within these study areas and explain how these could useful in general.
f) There is a law in science called causal law or causality. Discuss the assumption implied on it while stating it in essence and its importance in science.
