Question One
a) Distinguish between the following terms as used in Research methods.

i) Conceptual and empirical research.
ii) Exploratory and explanatory research.
iii) Correlational and fundamental research.
iv) Placed design and control – group design.
v) Cohort studies and panel studies.
b) i) Identify the motivating factors to people to undertake research studies.
(5 marks)
ii) Describe the role of computers in the process of data collection and
research in modern times. (5 marks)
c) i) Before and after study design is a two sets of cross-sectional data
collection points on the same population to find out change. Outline the

ii) Hypothesis provides focus to the study however some errors can occur in
testing a hypothesis. Identify the possible errors which occur in testing the
hypothesis. (5 marks)

Question Two

the importance of research to all people. Explain the significance of research to
Kenyans. (10 marks)
ii) Study designs based on the nature of the investigation can be classified as:
Experimental, non-experimental and Quasi or semi-experimental. Examine the
most commonly used types of experimental study designs in the departments of
social science, Humanities and Education. (10 marks)
Question Three
i) Research problem identifies your destination and it should tell you, your research
Supervisor and your readers what you intend to research. Discuss the factors to
be considered when selecting a research problem. (10 marks)
ii) A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and data
Analysis in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose
with economy in procedure. Evaluate the types of informal experimental research
designs in research methodology. (10 marks)
Question Four
i) A systematic Bias result from Errors in the sampling procedures and can not be
reduced or eliminated by increasing the sample size. Explain the possible
factors which can cause a systematic bias in sampling procedure and which are
the characteristics of a good sample design. (10 marks)
ii) Discuss the reasons as to why a researcher should prefer telephone interviews
As a method of collecting information other than collecting data through

i) Even the properly collected and analysed data when wrong interpretated
would lead to inaccurate conclusion similarity research findings should be
communicated to the readers through a report, efficiently and effectively.
Examine the precautions to be considered in interpretating data and writing

ii) Discuss the non-random or non – probability sampling designs commonly
used in qualitative and quantitative research. (10 marks)
