INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES:-
_ Answer three questions only
_ Questions one and two are compulsory
_ In question three choose only one of the optional texts you have prepared on
_ Where a candidate presents work on more than one optional text, only first one to appear will be marked.
_ Each of your essays must not exceed 450 words.
_ All answers to be written in the answers booklet provided.
This paper consists of 2 printed pages. Candidates should check to ascertain that both pages are printed as indicated and that no questions are missing.
1. CREATIVE COMPOSITION (COMPULSORY) (20 MARKS)
Either
(a) Write a story beginning with the following:
The political changes came like a strong wind. Even the birds up in the trees sang
melodiously to welcome the unexpected changes.
Or
(b) Write a composition detailing the effects of drug abuse.
2. THE COMPULSORY SET TEXT

Using The River Between by Ngugi wa Thiong’o for your illustrations, write an essay to show how
Waiyaki a victim of envy and hatred.
3. THE OPTIONAL SET TEXTS (20 MARKS)
Answer any one of the following three questions
Either
(a) THE SHORT STORY.

“Ngugi has effectively used the style of irony in telling his story.” Asses the validity of this statement
drawing your illustrations from Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s, A meeting in the dark.
Or
(b) PLAY
JOHN RUGANDA: Shreds of Tenderness
Vengeance usually makes the victim and the perpetrator suffer alike. Write an essay in the light of
this statement basing your argument on the play Shreds of Tenderness.
Or
(c) NOVEL
VELMA POLLARD: Homestretch
Write an essay on the conveniences faced by Jamaica’s immigrants. Refer to the novel Homestretch by Velma Pollard.
