 Questions one and two are compulsory.
 In question 3 choose only one of the optional texts you have prepared on.
 Where a candidate presents work on more than one optional text, only the first one to appear will be marked.
 Each of your essays must not exceed 450 words.
 ALL your answers to be written in the answer booklet provided.
This paper consists of 2 printed pages. Candidates should check the question paper to ensure that all pages are printed as indicated and no questions are missing.
1. Imaginative Composition (Compulsory) (20mks)
(a) Write a composition beginning with the following sentences.
Either
As we listened intently to the news broadcast, we heard the good news that................
Or
(b) Write a composition to illustrate the proverb. “The earliest bird catches the worm”
2. Compulsory (20mks)
Drama, William Shakespeare The merchant of Venice
Write a composition to illustrate the proverb “Half a loaf is better than none” with close
reference to the Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
3. Optional set texts (20mks)
Answer any one of the following three questions.
Either
(a) The short story
Macmillan Ed: Half a day and other stories.
“Female genital mutilation is an outdated and barbaric practice which should be done
away without question.” With close reference to Saida Itago - Dirie Herzie’s “Against
The Pleasure Principle.” Describe and explai how you would explain this to your
community.
Or
(b) Write a speech you would deliver to your classmates on the causes of political instability
and its effects. Your speech should be based on John Ruganda’s “Shreds of tenderness.”
Or
(c) The Novel, Velma Pollard, Homestretch. Drawing your illustrations from Homestretch,
write an essay about the problems faced when living in a foreign land.
