INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
• Answer THREE questions only.
• Questions ONE and TWO are compulsory
• In question THREE choose only ONE of the optional texts you have prepared on.
• Where a candidate presents work on more than one optional text, only the first one to appear will be marked.
• Each of your essays must not exceed 450 words.
Candidates should check the question paper to ensure that all the printed pages are printed as indicated and no
questions are missing.
1. IMAGINATIVE COMPOSITION (20MKS)
Either
(a) Write a story ending with the words:
“I wish I had known”.
OR
(b) Write a composition to illustrate the saying:
“A journey of one thousand miles begins with one step”.
2. The compulsory set text. (20mks)
William Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice.
“The audience are forced to emphathise with Shylock as he is a victim of circumstances”. Do
you agree? Write an essay drawing illustrations from the play to argue your case.
3. The optional set texts. (20mks)
Answer any one of the following three questions.
Either
a) The Short Story
Macmillan (Ed), Half a Day and Other stories.
The issue of Female Genital Mutilation (F.G.M) was among those raised during the recent
celebrations of the International Mother’s Day.
Using illustrations from the story “Against the Pleasure Principle” by Saida Hagi – Dirie
Herzi, give reasons why it should be abolished.
OR
b) Drama – John Ruganda. Shreds of Tenderness.
Illustrating your answer with examples from Shreds of Tenderness, write an essay entitled
“The Pivotal Role of the Girl Child”.
Or
c) The Novel
Velma Pollard, Homestretch
Write an essay illustrating the saying “East or west, home is the best” Cite examples from
Homestretch.
