Course:Bachelor Of Science In Information Technology

Institution: Masinde Muliro University Of Science And Technology question papers

Exam Year:2010

EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BIT 1305: COMPUTER NETWORKS
DATE: APRIL 2010 TIME: 2 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions
QUESTION ONE
a) Discuss the future Ethernet speeds. (3 Marks)
b) The description of a frame is a key element of each Data Link layer protocol. Data Link layer protocols require control information to enable the protocols to function. List four things that this control information may tell. (4 Marks)
c) The Internet Protocol specified in RFC 791 defines the IP packet format. The IP packet header has specific fields that contain information about the packet and about the sending and receiving hosts.
Describe briefly any six fields that are contained in the IP packet header. (6 Marks)
d) Describe the three components of a routing protocol. (6 Marks)
e) State the functions of any six of the most widely known and implemented TCP/IP application layer protocols. (6 Marks)
f) Each media type has its advantages and disadvantages. Outline five important factors to consider when selecting media for computer networks. (5 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
a) Compare and contrast the following:
(i) Time Division Multiplexing and Frequency Division Multiplexing (3 Marks)
(ii) processing delay and propagation delay (3 Marks)
(iii) POP3 and IMAP (3 Marks)
b) The continuing improvements in performance and decline in prices, together with the inherent advantages of optical fiber, have made it increasingly attractive for local area networking. Explain briefly any four characteristics that distinguish optical fiber from twisted pair or coaxial cable.
(4 Marks)
c) Explain any four ways that network managers can enhance availability and reliability of their networks. (4 Marks)
d) Briefly discuss the three (3) fundamental characteristics of a data communication system.
(3 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
a) Briefly explain the motivation for changing IPv4. (4 Marks)
b) Outline the five (5) components of a data communication system. (5 Marks)
c) State any four functions of a Web browser (4 Marks)
d) Describe the two levels of ISDN services (BRI and PRI). (7 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR
a) Describe briefly the following forms of communication:
(i) Instant Messaging (2 Marks)
(ii) Weblogs (blogs) (2 Marks)
(iii) Wikis (2 Marks)
(iv) Podcasting (2 Marks)
b) List any five factors that can determine throughput (5 Marks)
c) As a message moves through the network, many factors can prevent the message from reaching the recipient or distort its intended meaning. These factors can be either external or internal. Describe briefly any five external factors affecting the success of communication. (5 Marks)
d) Differentiate between legacy Ethernet and fast Ethernet. (2 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE
a) Online courseware and delivery offer many benefits to businesses. Describe three major benefits of online courseware. (6 Marks)
b) To visualize the interaction between various protocols, it is common to use a layered model. A layered model depicts the operation of the protocols occurring within each layer, as well as the interaction with the layers above and below it. Describe four benefits of using a layered model to describe network protocols and operations. (4 Marks)
c) The TCP/IP model describes the functionality of the protocols that make up the TCP/IP protocol suite. These protocols, which are implemented on both the sending and receiving hosts, interact to provide end-to-end delivery of applications over a network. Describe the steps involved in a complete communication process. (7 Marks)
d) In networking terms, reliability means ensuring that each piece of data that the source sends arrives at the destination. State the three basic operations of reliability at the Transport layer.
(3 Marks)
