INSTRUCTIONS
Answer ANY 10 questions. Each is 10 marks. Illustrate your answers with well- labeled diagrams where appropriate.
1. Outline the ontogeny of the development of cells of the immune system.
2. List any seven different functions of immunoglobulins giving the specific immunoglobulin(s) involved.
3. Describe the structure of primary and secondary lymphoid organs and their functions in the immune response.
4. With the aid of graphical illustration, describe the different phases during the clearance of an immunogen following a primary response.
5. Explain the role of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) in antigen presentation to T-cells.
6. Briefly describe the basic immunoglobulin structure.
7. Describe giving examples, the different forms of an acquired immune response.
8. List the distinguishing morphological features and functions of polymorphonuclear granulocytes.
9. Describe the sub- populations and functions of T-lymphocytes during an immune response.
10. Describe seven different antigenic preparations used to formulate present day vaccines.
11. Explain the following terms in relation to antibody- antigen function interactions.

12. Sketch a theoretical pattern of IgG levels in rabbit sera following primary immunization with sheep red blood cells and describe the kinetics of the antibody response.
13. (i). Differentiate between complement activation by the classical and alternative pathways.(2 marks)
(ii). Describe five immunological functions of complement. (5 marks)
14. (i). Differentiate between T – independent and T – dependent antigens. (2 marks)
(ii). State the properties of each of these antigens. (5 marks)

15. Describe the essential features of phagocytosis.
