1. Most development economists now seem to agree that the level and rate of GNP and per capita incomes do not provide sufficient or accurate measures of a country’s development. Evaluate this statement with practical examples.
2. What is the importance of economic development of a rapid productivity growth in agriculture and what factors seems to be holding back productivity growth in this sector?
3. Majority of developing economies have opted for policies of import substitution as a major strategy of their industrialization efforts. Explain the theoretical arguments in support of this strategy stating clearly some of the weaknesses of this strategy and why the strategy has not lived up to its expectations.
4. Proponents of liberalization argue that trade relationships between rich and poor nations would work towards long-run benefits of the rich nations. What is your position on this argument and what in your view are the dangers of trade liberalization?
5. Critically examine the classical theory of economic development and clearly bring out some of the shortcomings of this theory towards the understanding of development.
