CAT II

QUESTION ONE
A mass of 0.5kg connected to a light spring of force constant 20N/m oscillates on a horizontal, frictionless surface. Calculate

a. The total energy of the system and the maximum prefen the mass if the amplitude of the motion is 3cm

b. The velocity of the mass when the displacement is equal to 2cm

c. The kinetic and potential energies of the system when the displacement equals to 2cm

QUESTION TWO

Consider two masses connected by a string passing over a pulley having a moment of inertia l about its axis of rotation. The string does not slip on the pulley, and the system is released from rest. Find the linear velocity of the masses after m2 descends through a distance h, and the angular velocity of the pulley at this time.

QUESTION THREE

A vehicle of mass m accelerates up a hill. Assume that the magnitude of the drag force is given by |f|=218+0.7(v)(v), where v is the speed in m/s. The first term on the RHS is attributed to friction while the last term is due to air drag.

a. Calculate the power that the engine must deliver to the wheels, explain the terms of the power

b. If m=1450kg, v=27m/s and angle=10, calculate the power required and compare it to that required if the vehicle is travelling on a level road without acceleration.
