Basic Mechanics Questions
Elastic collisions.
1. Prove that relative velocity is reversed by a head-on elastic collision.
2. Define the coefficient of restitution, e, for a one-dimensional collision
3. A ball of 0.4kg mass and a speed of 3m/s has a head-on, completely elastic collision with a 0.6kg mass initially at rest. Find the speeds of both bodies after the collision.
4. A fast neutron has an elastic head-on collision with a proton (hydrogen atom) at rest. Assuming both have the same mass, use the conservation of energy and the conservation of momentum laws to show algebraically what happens.
5. Two perfectly elastic balls, one weighing 2 lb and the other 3 lb, are moving in opposite directions with speeds of 8 and 6 ft/s, respectively. Find their velocities after head-on impact.
6. Two identical balls collide head-on. The initial velocity of one is 0.75m/s, while that of the other is -0.43m/s. If the collision is perfectly elastic, what is the final velocity of each ball?
7. Sphere A of mass m and velocity v has an oblique, perfectly elastic collision with an identical sphere B initially at rest. Show that the angle between the velocities of the spheres after collision is 90.
