1. A 1-lb ball moving to the right at 12ft/s collides head-on with a 2-lb ball moving at 12ft/s in the opposite direction. If the two balls stick together after the collision, what is
a. Their total momentum after the collision

b. Their final velocity, including the direction?

2. An 8-g bullet is fired horizontally into a 9-kg block of wood and sticks in it. The block, which is free to move has a velocity of 40cm/s after impact. Find the initial velocity of the bullet.

3. A 16-g mass is moving in the +x direction at 30cm/s while a 4-g mass is moving in the -x direction at 50cm/s. They collide head-on and stick together. Find their velocity after collision

4. A 2-kg rock is moving at a speed of 6m/s. What constant force is needed to stop the rock in 0.0007s?

5. A 20-g bullet moving horizontally at 50m/s strikes a 7-kg block resting on a table. The bullet embeds in the block after collision. Find:

a. The speed of the block after the collision

b. The frictional force between the table and the block if the block notes 1.5m before stopping

6. Suppose that a horizontal force of 0.70N is required to pull a 5-kg block across a table at constant speed. What is the speed of a 20-g bullet, if the bullet embeds in the block and causes the block to slide 1.50m before coming to rest?

7. A 2500-lb car moving at 55mi/h in the positive direction collides head-on with a 3500-lb car moving at 25mi/h in the negative direction. The two cars stick together after the collision. Find the momentum (magnitude and direction) of the wreckage immediately after the collision. Also, find the velocity of the cars immediately after the collision

8. A railroad flatcar of mass M is coasting along a track at speed v when a large machine of mass m topples off a platform and falls straight down onto the car. How fast is the car moving after the machine comes to rest on it?

9. A 1.0kg steel ball 4.0m above the floor is released, falls, strikes the floor, and rises to a maximum height of 2.5m. Find the momentum transfered from the ball to the floor in the collision

10. A golf ball is dropped on a sidewalk from a height of 2m and rebounds to a height of 1.50m. What was the impulse? Assuming that the ball was in contact with the concrete for 7ms, find the average acceleration.
What was the coefficient of restitution? (the mass of the ball is 45.8g)

11. A mass A of 0.8kg moving to the right with a speed of 5m/s collides head-on with a mass B of 1.2kg moving in the opposite direction with a speed of 4m/s. After the collision A is moving to the left with a speed of 4m/s. Find the velocity of B after collision and the coefficient of restitution.

12. A hailstone strikes the roof of a parked car. The hailstone hits with a speed of 10m/s and rebounds to a height of 0.20m. What fraction of its initial kinetic energy is lost in the impact?

b. The hailstone had radius r=5.0mm and relative density 0.900. Assume that during the collision the hailstone is decelerated to rest in the time it would take to travel its own diameter. What average force must the roof exert?

c. What pressure, in kilopascals does the hailstone experience in the collision?

13. A tennis ball bounces down a flight of stairs, striking each step in turn and rebounding to the height of the step above. If the height of each step is d, what is the coefficient of restitution?

14. A ball strikes the floor vertically and rebounds with a coefficient of restitution of 0.8. If the mass of the ball is 0.011 slug and its velocity is 5ft/s just before it hits, what is the momentum of the ball as it leaves the floor?

15. A ball is dropped from a height h above a tile floor and rebounds to a height of 0.64h. Find the coefficient of restitution between the ball and floor
