Basic Mechanics Question Paper

Basic Mechanics

Course:Bachelor Of Electrical And Electronics Engineering

Institution: Moi University question papers

Exam Year:2011

Basic Mechanics
Topic; Recoil and Reaction.

1. An artillery piece, of mass m1, fires a shell, of mass m2. Find the ratio of the kinetic energies of the artillery piece and of the shell just after the firing. Assume the shell is fired horizontally.

2. A 10-g bullet leaves a rifle barrel with a velocity of 600m/s to the east. If the barrel is 1m long and the gun has a mass of 4-kg, what is;
a. The recoil velocity of the rifle
b. The force exerted on the bullet
c. The time during which the bullet was accelerated
d. The impulse supplied to the bullet, (assuming a constant force on the bullet in the barrel)

3. A machine gun fires six bullets per second into a target. The mass of each bullet is 3g, and the speed is 500m/s. Find the average force required to hold the gun in position. What is the power delivered to the bullets?

4. Two blocks of masses 200g and 500g sit on a frictionless table with an essentially massless spring placed between them. They are pushed together until an energy of 3.0J is stored in the spring. When released, the masses shoot off in opposite directions. What is the speed of;
a. The centre of mass
b. The 500g block

5. A 500-lb gun fires a 2-lb projectile with a muzzle velocity of 1600ft/s. Determine the initial recoil velocity v of the gun

b. If the recoil is against a constant resisting force of 400lb, what are the time taken to bring the gun to rest and the distance it recoils?

6. A 0.25-kg ball moving in the +x direction at 13m/s is hit by a bat. Its final velocity is 19m/s in the -x direction. The bat acts on the ball for 0.010s. Find the average force exerted on the ball by the bat.

7. A 500-g pistol lies at rest on an essentially frictionless table. It accidentally discharges and shoots a 10-g bullet parallel to the table. How far has the pistol moved by the time the bullet hits a wall 5 m away?

8. While coasting along a street at a constant velocity of 0.50m, a 20-kg girl in a 5-kg wagon sees a vicious dog in front of her. She has with her only a 3.0-kg bag of sugar which she is bringing from the grocery, and she throws it at the dog with a forward velocity of 4.0m/s relative to her original motion. How east is she moving after she throws the bag of sugar?
