Basic Mechanics

Course:Bachelor Of Electrical And Electronics Engineering

Institution: Moi University question papers

Exam Year:2011

Basic Mechanics
Topic; Recoil and Reaction

1. A 60-kg man dives from the stern of a 90-kg boat with a horizontal component of velocity of 3.0m/s north. Initially the boat was at rest. Find the magnitude and direction of the velocity acquired by the boat.

2. Suppose that a boy stands at one end of a boxcar sitting on a railroad track. Let the mass of the boy and the boxcar be M. He throws a ball of mass m with velocity v toward the other end, where it collides elastically with the wall and travels back down the length (L) of the car, striking the opposite side inelastically and coming to rest. If there is no friction in the wheels of the boxcar, describe the motion of the boxcar.

3. A 60-kg astronaut becomes separated in space from her spaceship. She is 15.0 m away from it and at rest relative to it. In an effort to get back, she throws a 500-g wrench with a speed of 8.0 m/s in a direction away from the ship. How long does it take her to get back to the ship?

4. A 4-kg rifle fires a 6-g bullet with a speed of 500 m/s. What kinetic energy is acquired
a. By the bullet?

b. By the rifle

c. Find the ratio of the distance the rifle moves backward while the bullet is in the barrel to the distance the bullet moves forward.

5. A missile launcher, of mass 4400kg, fires horizontally a rocket of mass 110kg and recoils up a smooth inclined plane, rising to a height of 4m. Find the initial speed of the rocket

6. A boy of mass m is standing on a toboggan of mass M which is moving with constant velocity V, over the surface of a frozen lake. The boy then runs along the toboggan in the direction opposite to V and acquires a speed v relative to the toboggan as he jumps off the rear of the toboggan. What is the final speed of the toboggan relative to the ice?

7. A rocket standing on its launch platform points straight upward. Its jet engines are activated and eject gas at a rate of 1500kg/s. The molecules are expelled with a speed of 50,000m/s. How much mass can the rocket initially have if it is slowly to rise because of the thrust of the engine?
