SECTION A

Question One

a) Define the following terms used in livestock nutrition.

i. Total Mixed Ratios (TMR) [2 marks]
ii. Feed additive [2 marks]
iii. Essential Amino Acid [2 marks]
iv. Microbial protein [2 marks]

b) In detail, discuss at least FOUR anti-nutritional factors associated with feeding of plant proteins as supplements to livestock, highlighting their origin, symptoms and control measures. [12 marks]

Question Two

a) Highlight the benefits associated with feeding of total mixed ratios (TMR).[8 marks]

b) Give a detailed account for sources of energy loss within a farm animals, with special reference to ruminants. [12 marks]

Question Three

a) A Dairy farmer from Muranga county has called you for a training and demonstration consultancy in feeding formulation. The feed ingredients in his farm are sunflower seed cake as protein source with 42% crude protein (CP) and wheat bran with 9% crude protein (CP). He is requesting for a mixture of the two that will have 18% crude protein for his high yielding dairy cows. Using PEARSON’S SQUARE compute this feed.

b) Discuss the homeostatic mechanisms of controlling the rumen environment.

a) In detail, discus the methods for improving the quality of utilization of crop residues as Dry season feeding strategy. [12 marks]
