QUESTION ONE [30 MARKS]

(a) Define a computer network [2 marks]
(b) Outline three types of networks [3 marks]
(c) Explain what you understand by systems network administration [3 marks]
(d) State five qualifications for the post of a network administrator. [5 marks]
(e) Name three network operating systems [3 marks]
(f) Briefly explain the following network hardware components. Use a diagram.[6marks]

(g) Identify four factors that contribute to high network performance [4 marks]
(h) Explain the following types of network protocols [4 marks]

QUESTION TWO [20 MARKS]

All Network systems administrators are required to be able to configure computer networks as well as perform administrative work on servers and clients.

(a) Discuss how to configure client /server network mode assuming that you are using windows 2000 or windows 2003 server from a CD. [15 marks]
(b) Briefly state and explain the steps of configuring a network [5marks]

QUESTION THREE [20 MARKS]

Karen Campus a branch of JKUAT has decided to install N-computing Network technology in one of its labs. It was anticipated that between 60 to 70 students would use the lab at any practical session. However the system faced serious challenges such as hanging up, network too slow, some machines not able to access the server among many problems.

(a) With the aid of a diagram, explain the concept of N-computing . [6 marks]
(b) As the systems network administrator advice the university on how to go about the challenges. [5 markss]
(c) N-computing would be an effective and efficient technology for learning institutions however it has not been widely adopted.
(i)Apart from the identified challenges, state three additional bottlenecks of n-computing.

(d) Explain with the aid of a diagram how you would design an effective –computing network to which organizations again would you recommend n-computing . [4 marks]

QUESTION FOUR [20 MARKS]

(a) What are the four causes of delay in a packet switched network? [4 marks]
(b) Suggest how such delay caused can reduced. [4 marks]
(c) Distinguish between a software address and hardware address as need in network addressing
[4 marks]
(d) Define a network address and explain its significance in a network [2 marks]
(e) Discuss the difference between the class A, class B and class C addresses [6 marks]


QUESTION FIVE [20 MARKS]

Of late the Principal of JKUAT Karen Campus computer has been experiencing constant network connection failure. As a network administrator you have been approached to give an expert opinion.

(a) Identify five likely caused of the network connection failure. [5 marks]
(b) Advice the University on the necessary trouble shooting steps to establish the cause and resolve the connection failure problem. [10 marks]
(c) Even after trying the options in (b) above the compute still does not see the network. Outline any other additional steps you would recommend to solve the problem.[5 marks]
