QUESTION ONE (20 MARKS)

(a) Differentiate between logical and physical data independence.
[4 marks]

(b) Discuss any three database objects found in MS Access.
[6 marks]

(c) (i) Explain the concept of Normalization and explain any three
of its advantages. [4 marks]

(ii) Explain the rules governing the following types of normal forms:

I. 1NF.
II. 2NF.
III. 3NF. [6 marks]





QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

You have been hired by Batabatar Enterprises Limited to develop a database for their organization:

(a) Describe all the steps you would take to come up with the said database. [10 marks]


(b) Explain any five factors you would consider in choosing a database management system for the company. [10 marks]



QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)

(a) Draw an E-R diagram that shows the restaurant environment, chefs, meals, ingredients and customers. State any assumptions made in the design of the ERD. [10 marks]


(b) Using examples, explain the significance of setting the following field properties in table design:

(i) Validation rule.
(ii) Input mask.
(iii) Default value. [6 marks]


(c) Briefly explain any four advantages of DBMS (database management systems). [4 marks]


QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

(a) Name and briefly explain any five datatypes supported by MS Access. [10 marks]

(b) Outline the steps you would follow to carry out the following operations in Microsoft Access:

(i) Set a field to be the primary key.
(ii) Set a relationship between tables.
(iii) Set a password to protect your database.
(iv) Rename a field.
(v) Insert a column. [10 marks]
