QUESTION ONE (20 MARKS)
(a) Define the following terminologies as used in database systems:

(b) Give two advantages and disadvantages of the database management systems over the file processing systems.

(c) Differentiate between the following terms: [4 marks]
(i) Text and number datatypes.
(ii) Primary key and foreign key.
(d) State any four components of a database environment.

(e) State any four examples of DBMS. [2 marks]

(a) Name and explain three types of queries. [6 marks]
(b) Define the term database models. [2 marks]
(c) Discuss any four types of database models used today, use diagrams where necessary. [12 marks]

(a) In regard to relational model concepts, discuss briefly the following concepts: [6 marks]
(i) Conceptual design.
(ii) Logical design.
(iii) Physical design.
(b) Discuss any features of concepts in (a)(iii). [2 marks]
(c) Explain any five datatypes used in Ms Access. [5 marks]
(d) List the steps followed while creating a table. [7 marks]
QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
(a) Draw an ER-diagram for the following situation:
A company has a number of employees. The attributes of EMPLOYEE include NAME, ADDRESS, BIRTHDATE and DATEHIRE. One method that is required of all employees is to calculate year of service. The company also has several projects. Attributes of PROJECT include CODE, DESCRIPTION and STARTDATE. Each employee may be assigned to one or more projects or may be assigned to a project. A project must have at least one employee assigned and may not be assigned to a project. A project must have at least one employee assigned and may have several employees assigned. One method required of all projects is calculate total cost to date. [10 marks]
(b) State four differences between forms and reports. [4 marks]
(c) Define the following:
(i) Entity.
(ii) Relationship.
(iii) Attributes. [6 marks]
