Question One [30 marks]

a) i. Define the concept Project Management and [3 marks]

ii. Show its advantages and disadvantages. [4 marks]

iii. Explain how it can be applied to an organization and give examples of any organization(s) with which you are familiar. [4 marks]

iv. Show why it is considered different to other forms of management. [4 marks]

b) List the characteristics of a project and describe the features of any three of them.
[4 marks]

c) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the matrix form of organization.
[3 marks]

d) Managers use certain criteria to judge selection of projects. What are some of the limitations of projects selection model? [4 marks]

e) Explain the relevance of Gantt Chart in project management process. [4 marks]

a) With illustration of a diagram, show the process of a project life cycle as outlined by Baum, 1978 and explain the role of each phase/stage. [6 marks]

b) i. What is the role of a project manager? [4 marks]

ii. Identify key factors that should be considered in the process of setting up a project monitoring system. [5 marks]

c) Describe the circumstances under which a project can be terminated. [5 marks]

Question Three (20 marks)

a) i. With references from any three Project Management scholars, define the term
PROJECT and show: [4 marks]

ii. Types of project and explain their role. [2 marks]

iii. Destination between a project and programme. [4 marks]

iv. How a project differs from conventional business. [2 marks]

b) An Information Technology (IT) analyst, suggest a community pilot project and explain how you can develop your project management systems. [4 marks]

c) All projects whether big or small in size require capital. Explain the purpose of appraisal before commitment of funds into a project. [4 marks]

Question Four (20 marks)

a) In spite of positive feasibility analysis report, most projects in developing societies fail to achieve their goals within the scheduled time frame or do not realize their goals completely. With examples from Kenyan projects, explain the reasons leading to such situations. [7 marks]

b) Work Breakdown structure (WBS) subdivides the scope of work into manageable work packages. Discuss briefly. [6 marks]

c) A successful project should contain nine (9) key elements. List the elements and describe the composition of any three of them. [7 marks]





Question Five (20 marks)

a) Project Planning Control Cycle is the heart of project integration (Burke, 2009). As project manager, explain how you would develop the planning and control cycle of your organization. [7 marks]

b) Scope management of a project is characterized with change to the scope of work. Show how proposed system will capture and process any changes. [6 marks]

c) In the process of project goal setting, project managers experience various constraints. Discuss any four of these constraints and show how they can affect the success of a project. [7 marks]
