1. A) State graham’s law of diffusion and give the relationship between the times (t1 and t2) of diffusion of two gases of masses M1 and M2 respectively to diffuse through a hole at a given temperature. 4 marks
B) if it takes 4.6 times as long for a gas y to effuse as it takes hydrogen gas (molar mass= 1) under the same conditions. Calculate:
i) what is the molecular mass of the gas Y? 4 marks
ii) separation factor for Y and hydrogen 2 marks
iii) Give applications of diffusion separation method in a chemical industry. 5 marks
2. A) define the term colligative properties and show their mathematical relationships. 10 marks
b) illustrate using a phase diagram of water the three colligative properties: freezing point depression, boiling point depression, boiling point elevation and vapor pressure lowering. 10 marks
c) a 7.85g sample of a compound with empirical formula C5H4 is dissolved in 301g of benzene. The freezing point of the solution is 1.05C below that of pure benzene. What are the:
i) molar mass
ii) molecular formula of this compound?

3. Write short notes on the following:
a. Industrial fraction distillation column
b. Choosing optimal conditions for the synthesis of ammonia
c. Dependence of % ionization on initial concentration of a weak acid and a strong acid
d. Preparation of an acetate buffer solution whose pH= 4.92; pKa for acetic acid is 4.74.
