Explain the structural organization of the following Discourse extract using each
of the following categories.
(a)
Transaction, and Act, according to the Birmingham school model of
Discourse Analysis.
(b)
Topic and Topic shift; and Conversational Phases according to
Sociological Conversational Analysis (CA).
(c)
Halliday and Hasan?s (1976) Lexical cohesion.

(Rhoda and Monica, KU students are waiting for a 2-4pm class)
RHODA:
Things are very tough here in KU.
MONICA:
In KU here things can be bad. I had to discontinue my Semester last year.
RHODA:
Eh! Then what happened to you?
MONICA:
That is why I am here to fill the gaps

RHODA:
CRE, History.
MONICA:
Ah! I have a friend who was my year mate. She did CRE and she was
good. She would do her research in the Internet and get very good
arguments.
RHODA:
Eh! That is the person I would like to meet.
MONICA:
I?ll ring her but I do not have credit.

RHODA:
Here is the phone I have credit.
(Monica picks up Rhoda?s phone and rings her friend)
MONICA:
(On phone call) Hi. How is your free August? Imagine I am at KU. Please
could we meet on Saturday 30th August 2003? I have my new found
friend. I would like you to meet her. She is worth meeting.
PHONE ANSWER:
(It?s okay. Where and at what time?)
MONICA:
In front of Stanchart at 10.00am, tomorrow.
PHONE ANSWER:
(Bye God bless you).
MONICA:
The deal is made Rhoda. We?ll meet her. She will be of great help to you.
RHODA:
thank you so much Rhoda. That is why friends are there for one another.
