Instructions: This paper has two sections: Section I and Section II. Answer all the questions in section I and only two questions in section II.

SECTION I

Question One

List four climatic factors controlled by agricultural buildings and explain briefly how each factor can adversely affect farm production if not controlled. (8mks)

Question Two
Mention and explain four reasons why building arrangement should be decided carefully in farmstead planning. (8mks)

Question Three
In a small and medium scale intensive pig production unit a universal pen can be used for farrowing, suckling and growing. State and explain two adjustments required when changing such a pen from a growing/finishing pen to a farrowing/suckling pen. (8mks)

Question Four
The site for construction of chicken housing should be selected to meet certain basic requirements. Discuss four such requirements. (8mks)

Question Five

Wood can be used as a building material.

List four uses of wood as a building material.

Discuss two advantages and two disadvantages of wood as a building material.

SECTION II

Question Six
Estimate the quantity of materials required to build the floor slab of a room whose dimensions are 12m by 18m; if the slab is 15cm and the ration to use is 1:3:5 and the expected percentage of waste is 8% while the percentage of shrinkage is 12%. Assume that the bulk density of sand is 1450 kg/m3 while the bulk density of ballast is 1750 kg/m3. (15mks)

Question Seven
With the help of diagrams, describe any three stream crossing structures commonly used in farm road drainage. (15mks)

Question Eight

The figure provided shows a simple cage system for layers. Use the figure to answer the questions below:

Explain the function of the parts labeled A, B and C

(3mks)

Draw a diagram to show the details and standard dimensions of the part labeled A.

(4mks)

On a different diagram, sketch a different design of a cage system (dimensions not required) and specify the differences between the design shown above and the one in your answer.
