SECTION ONE

Question One (Compulsory)

According to FAO reports, regions like Sub-Saharan Africa with very low intensity of mechanization also have very low crop yield per hectare of cultivate land. Discuss briefly four reasons why yields and level of mechanization may be related.

Compared to tractors, the use of animals for farm mechanization has a number of advantages and disadvantages. List four of those advantages and four disadvantages.

Farm implements can be classified on basis of the operation they are intended to perform. List four such classes of implements and name one implement in each group.

(8 marks)

List four types of primary cultivation implements and state the conditions in which each type is more suitable than the others.

(8 marks)

Discuss four things which should be done for the maintenance and good care of implements for fertilizer application.

Question Two
The selection of a weed control method is influenced by a wide range of factors. List five of those factors and for each factor describe the most appropriate implement you would use. (5 marks)

Question Three
Describe five components of a seed planter and state how each component should be taken care of. (15 marks)

Question Four
With the help of diagrams where possible, describe five types of secondary tillage implements. (15 marks)
