INSTRUCTIONS
Of the six questions listed below, select three and discuss them to the best of your ability.
Number one is compulsory.
Question One
The freelance journalist needs to be conversant in all fields of journalistic writing and reporting.
Pick a topic or story idea and describe how you would approach it in at least five different ways (e.g. as a business story, etc). (30 Marks)
Question Two
Freelance Journalists require specific skills to be effective and successful. Identify at least four of those skills and describe how those skills are useful in writing a news or feature story. (20 Marks)
Question Three
Freelance Journalists are by definition in business for themselves. Identify a minimum of four basic needs that the freelance journalist must satisfy to establish a solid business. Explain how the four areas will work together to ensure success. (20 Marks)
Question Four
The ethics of journalism require that the journalist does not align him/herself too closely with any one entity, be it a person, political party, corporation, religion etc. Identify at least four ways that the freelance journalist can avoid and retain his integrity and sense of ethics. (20 Marks)
Question Five
Online journalism and print journalism are said to require different types of journalistic writing. Take a stand on whether writing for print media or online media are different or similar. Give reasons to defend your position either way. (20 Marks)
Question Six
Why is research seen as an important aspect of freelance journalism? Identify a minimum of four research tools and techniques and describe how they would be used to develop a story idea. (20 Marks)
