Answer question one (compulsory) and any other two questions.

Question One
Identify four international news publication that you could send story ideas to, then construct a story idea and explain how you would pitch it to an editor in each of the four publications. Also explain how you chose the editor you did and why? How would you follow up on your pitch and story ideas. (30 marks)

Question Two
There are pros and cons, positives and negatives, to being a freelance journalist versus being a full-time journalist. Give at least four positive reasons and four negative reasons for being or not being a freelance journalist. (20 marks)

Question Three
Freelance journalism is often described as a business. Give four factors that you see as important to becoming a success in the business of freelance journalism, and explain why you believe each of the four factors is important to achieving that success. (20 marks)

Question Four
The media as a social institution in Kenya has been accused of fostering corruption by the alleged acceptance by journalists of ’brown envelopes,’ a code name for bribes. State two ways that corrupt journalists contribute to the corruption of other social institution by their accepting bribes. State two additional ways they contribute to ridding society of corruption and impunity by their not taking bribes. (20 marks)

Question Five
Identify a minimum of four essential skills that one is required to have in order to succeed in journalism and explain why all four are important. (20 marks)
