SECTION A (40 MARKS)
Answer ALL Questions
1. Define the concept of God in African Traditional Religions. [5 marks]
2. Mrs Zoraya Owino died in Plane crush in Nigeria on her way to Kenya. After the family
failed to find her body, they contacted prayers in her Church followed by a burial of
banana leaf as the culture demands. Explain the rationale behind “leaf burial” and the
implication to Christianity. [5 marks]
3. Andrew Mularya passed on a year ago leaving his wife and five children. The widow
Mrs. Mularya requested her Church to join her on Saturday for a memorial service. On
Wednesday she made her announcement through the Nation Newspaper which reads: “It
is one year since you were promoted to glory.. you are missed by your wife, children,
Church and friends …” Evaluate

4. The Church in Africa is celebrating hundred years yet it is characterize as “one inch deep
and mile long.” Africans are referred to as “notoriously religious” and yet Witch craft is
on the rise. Why? Is this an indication that African Christianity and the Missionary
Christianity are different? Discuss [15 marks] and recommend steps which the Church
need to take in order to correct the problem. [5 marks]
SECTION B (30 MARKS)
Answer THREE Questions.
5. In Kenya the Masai, Marakwet, Somalis, Kisii among others still circumcise their girls yet
the practice is illegal. Explain why the practice is persistent and identify three major
alternatives. [15 marks]
6. In the Month of February alone, the Kenyan media captured two mysterious stories. The
first was Kisii lawyer who heard a knock at his door at night when he opened, a black
snake wrapped itself around his neck making the Lawyer loss his voice and consequently
postponing a case that was schedule the following day. The second one was a witch who
caused stomachs of alleged “thieves” swell as punishment of their crimes. Are these only
beliefs or realites? Explain [15 marks]
7. Compare and contrast current treatment of Witch in Africa and the treatment of Witch in
Europe between 1400 to 1700 Centuries and draw lessons for the Church today.
[15 marks]
8. On February 12, 2011, Sabaot Laibons lead by Mzee Chonge conducted a cleansing
ceremony of two warring Ndorobo and Soy clans. The Laibons claimed, “The ceremony
is not only for Mt. Elgon but also a cleansing for anything that transpired and saw lost
and many Kenya shed blood.” Discuss [15 marks]
