Answer ALL Questions in Section A and any TWO in Section B

SECTION A: (40 marks)
1. a) Draw a diagram to illustrate the distribution of the nadal tissue in the heart, and
state the significance of the nadal tissue (3 marks)
b) In an experiment, the following values were obtained:
End diastolic volume – 80 ml
End systolic volume - 20ml
Heart rate – 1 beat/second
Total lung capacity – 4.5 litres
Tidal volume – 0.8 litres
Residual volume – 1 litre
Expiratory reserve volume – 0.5 litres
Calculate the:
i. Stroke volume (1 mark)
ii. Cardiac output (2 marks)
iii. Vital capacity (1 mark)
iv. inspiratory reserve volume (1 mark)
c) State 3 factors that may cause variations of the per minute volume in an elephant
(3 marks)
2. Describe how the internal body fluid concentration and volume are kept in the right
balance for normal functioning of the cells. (10 marks)
3. Describe the metabolic role of the liver (7 marks)
4. Describe the functional role of hormones in the development of the male reproductive
system (6 marks)
5. (a) Explain why a new inhabitant in a hot desert is likely to experience painful muscle
contractions and suggest a probable solution (3 marks)
(b) Describe 3 ways by which mammals living in hot deserts balance their needs for
water regulation and temperature regulation (3 marks)

SECTION B: (30 marks)
6. Describe the basic principles of homeostasis and explain how they work to maintain acidbase
balance (15 marks)
7. a) Trace the path taken by a molecule of oxygen from the atmosphere to a man’s
p ulm ona ry vein (5 marks)
b) Describe how this path way is adapted to its functions (10 marks)
8. Describe with the aid of a well labeled diagram, the structure of a skeletal muscle fiber
and explain how these structures relate to muscle contraction (15 marks)
