QUESTION 1 Case Study
GIBSON-X-RAY OPTICAL SYSTEM
When entrepreneurs think about the team they must assemble for their new business, they
think first of co founders and then of key employees they must attract. Often, though,
they overlook other persons who although they may not work directly with the
entrepreneur in starting the company, also play a crucial role in its success. I think you
have a number of different skills important for success. A varied, electric background is
valuable. And you must be able to make decisions, if you cannot, you cannot run a
business. And you must be able to make decisions under uncertainty, without all the
information you would ideally like to have. You have to be able to sell – that is truly a
value –added activity. I spend 70-80% of time selling. I have to sell my family on risks,
investors and suppliers on why they should gives us 90 days to pay our accounts,
employees and their families. Selling is really what you do, and you have to be good at it
to succeed. Starting a company is big risk, and you should not do it unless your spouse
and close family are okay with it. They have to understand the downside as swell as the
upside. If they are not comfortable with the risks, including the debts you have to take on,
you really cannot proceed. I have seen some real horror stories-happy couples who get
divorced after many years together because one could not handle the risks, the
uncertainly and the absence of the spouse from home so many hours every week. No one
talks about this in business classes but in my view, it is crucial. Infact, entrepreneur’s
ought to choose a spouse who can handle risks and uncertainty. If they marry some one
for whom that is upsetting, life can be very difficult for everyone involved.”
