SECTION ONE: (COMPLUSORY – (60 MARKS)
1. Read the following extract from an academic article and then answer the questions that
follow.
Typical stereotypes address the need of slave owners to give reasons for slavery. Sambo,
with his mindless frockling, intense loyalty to the master and childlike need for protection
and guidance is a good example (Jordan, 1992b). Sambo needed his master as much as his
master needed him. To enslave another race requires some justification (Geist & Jimenez,
1994).” Other good blacks were always loyal. Mammy was the fat, jolly, motherly cook;
Uncle Tom was her husband, older Black who served competently and faithfully”. (Geist &
Jimenez, 1994, p. 133). Both are content with their position, having accepted the family
values. Both love their masters.
Following the horror of the Holocaust, the U.S government began to legislate against racist
behavior at home (Bailey, 1996). Legal barriers supporting segregation were torn down.
Jobs in the rust-belt industries of auto and steel increased black social mobility and a
significant middle class of people of racist language, even under the Reagan administration,
became unfashionable (Geist and Jimenez, 1994).
Children of the poor, however, include, to a disproportionate extent, people of color, and
the underclass of Black and Brown working and poor people at the margins of society has
grown (West, 1995). As Bakarric and Robins (1995) explain the problem. “Despite a
change in language, [racist] ideas still flourish in a more coded way; expressions of
hostility to affirmative action, busing and special interests…have now replaced overt racist
discourse” (p. 144). At the same time, the federal government is cutting back federal
payments to the needy and diminishing occupational health, safety and environmental
protection (Bailey, 1996).
The number of low wage, service sector jobs is rapidly increasing. Those most adversely
affected by these policies have been blue-collor industrial workers and poor, particularly
women and children (West Ibid). These children then go into an impoverished educational
system and face unequal opportunities when they enter the labour force.
