1. Answer THREE Questions in Section A and ONE Question in Section B
2. This is not an open book Exam. Any form of cheating will lead to immediate dismissal from the exam room. The candidate will earn a failing grade.

SECTION A
1. Explain in detail the meaning of the concept ‘Mediatised Conflicts’. [10 Marks]
2. Explain with examples the impact of media on unfolding conflict when it plays the following roles:
(a) Watch dog [5 Marks]
(b) Lap dog [5 Marks]
(c) Mouthpiece [5 Marks]
3. What role does a mediated PUBLIC SPHERE play in conflict mitigation? Use real life examples to illustrate your answer. [15 Marks]
4. ‘Media can never be independent in conflict’. Assess the implication of this claim and present a solid stand agreeing or disagreeing with the claim. You may use examples from media coverage of recent conflicts to explain your stand. [15 Marks]
SECTION B
5. The film, peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land, presents a strong case in claiming that the American media has played a significant role in defining the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Discuss fully how the said media has throughout the years concretised specific realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the global media audience.
[20 Marks]
6. What is the ‘CNN Effect’? Discus how the CNN effect contributed to Government policy relating to Gulf War I and II, or any other recent global conflicts. You may cite Michael Moore’s film, Farenheight 911, to illustrate your answer. [20 Marks]
