BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (AGED)
BOTA 111: GENERAL GENETICS
STREAMS: B.sc. (AGED) TIME: 2 HOURS
DAY/DATE: THURSDAY 8/8/2013 11.30 AM – 1.30 PM
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Answer all Questions in Section A and any two in Section B.
• Use illustrations where appropriate to enhance your answers.
Section A (30 Marks)
1. (a) Explain briefly the processes that lead to the genetic disorder, alkaptonuria in human beings. [3 marks]
(b) Define the following terms:
(i) gamete
(ii) genotype
(iii) testeross
(iv) codominant alleles. [2 marks]
2. An organism is heterozygous for 6 different independently assorting genes. It is crossed with another of similar genotype. Showing how you arrive at your answer,
(a) predict the fraction of the progeny that will be homozygous for all the 6 recessive alleles. [5 marks]
(b) predict the fraction of the progeny that will homozygous for all 6 genes.
[5 marks]
3. (a) In the snapdragon, crossing a plant bearing red flowers with another bearing white flowers produces F1 progeny bearing pink flowers. Explain the gene interaction involved. [3 marks]
(b) Write short notes on the only viable monosomy in man. [4 marks]
(c) Describe polyploidy and explain briefly how it can be of benefit to man.
[4 marks]
4. (a) State whether DNA replication is conservative or non-conservative. [1 mark]
(b) Briefly explain the evidence given in support of the method of DNA replication in (a) above [4 marks]
Section B (40 Marks)
5. Describe the process of transcription of the genetic material. 20 marks]
6. A researcher of Pisum Sativum made a dihybrid cross to investigate the genes controlling seed colour and texture, and obtained the following numbers F2 offspring:
2990 plants bearing round, yellow seeds
887 plants bearing round, green seeds
901 plants bearing wrinkled, yellow seeds
305 plants bearing wrinkled, green seeds.
Using an appropriate statistical test, accept or reject the hypothesis that the results fit the typical dihybrid phenotypic ratio. [20 marks]
7. Discuss commonly encountered trisomies in man. [20 marks]
