1. (i) What is the importance of Rhetoric to journalistic communication? [8 Marks]
(ii) Discuss the six canons of rhetoric. [12 Marks]
(iii) Because rhetoric is a public art capable of shaping opinion, some of the ancients
including Plato found fault in it. They claimed that while it could be used to improve civic life, it could be used equally easily to deceive or manipulate with negative effects. Do you agree or disagree. Explain. [10 Marks]
(iv) Redesign the underlying message of “weka condom mpangoni” campaign cited in the attached article (below) in a way that may be receptive to a wider mass audience. [5 Marks]
2. Enumerate the elements of Rhetoric invention you may consider as opposition press editor when writing a speech to persuade the government to slap a heavy tax on every unmarried man above the age of 36 years. [20 Marks]
3. (i) Using relevant examples from your study, discuss five factors that may have influenced the adoption decision about the female condom by women in Africa.
[10 Marks]
(ii) How as a communicator would you persuade the women in your home locality to adopt the innovation? [10 Marks]
4. Outline your design of the ‘boy child education’ campaign using the ‘A’advocacy structure. [20 Marks]
5. (i) Distinguish between informative rhetoric and argumentation. [4 Marks]
(ii) How is citizen journalism different from citizen’s journalism? [4 Marks]
(iii) Explain in three points how the political satires (News Short, Hekaheka,
Kukurukakara, Bulls Eye, Truth Meter etc) on Kenyan TV channels may lead to a ‘crisis of legitimation’. [12 Marks]
6. As a government spokesman write a propagandist editorial piece in not more than six hundred words either, arguing that:
(i) War should only be declared by a national referendum. [20 Marks]
Or
(ii) Assuming that you are the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Economic Planning, write a one and hald page press release on your Ministry’s contentious and heavy tax on every unmarried parent. [20 Marks]
