2. Questions ONE is Compulsory.
3. Answer at least ONE QUESTION from Section B – Poetry
4. Where necessary, write in continuous Prose.

1. The play Otongolia (Alakie Akinyi Mboya) deals with mythical state but touches on
real issues that transcend time and space of African states. Discuss in details the
issues the author highlights in the play and how they replicate those of any east Africa
state. (30 marks)

2. Show how John Ruganda in the play the floods has succeeded in using symbolism to
comment on the events of African states. (20 marks)

3. Using any texts studied in this course, show how the theme of betrayal became the
pre-occupation of playwrights from East Africa in the “seventies” and Eighties
(20 marks)
4. Either
a. Define the term “The great Tradition” and show how it created “early African
writers into “imitators” instead of “innovators”. (20 marks)

OR

b. The present forms of Drama and Theatre in East Africa have their origins in
Colonial efforts to entrench English Language.

SECTION B- POETRY
5. i) Give an account of how you would effectively present a poem to a reader in an
attempt to demystify the notion that poetry is difficult and boring. (10marks)

ii) Using any poems studied in this course, show how the spirit of nationalism and
nation building became betrayal disillusionment and abuse of power to the
populace. (10 marks)

6. State the reasons why “the second Generation poets were referred to as “a song
school”, the subjects? themes that ran through their poems and how relevant they
were. (20 marks)

7. Give an account why song of Lawins (Okot P’Bitek) serves as a milestone and
testimony of success in East African Literary consciousness. (20 marks)

8. Trace the trends and forms of poetry found in East Africa from early origins to the
present.
