3. Answer at least ONE QUESTION from Section B – Drama
4. Where necessary, write in continuous Prose.
SECTION A - POETRY
1. a). Give an account of how you would effectively present a poem to a reader in an attempt
to demystify the notion that “poetry is difficult and boring.” (15 Marks)
b). Using any poems studied in this course, show how the spirit of Nationalism and Nation
Building became betrayal, disillusionment and abuse of power to the populace.

2. Trace the trends and forms of poetry found in East Africa from early origins to the present.
(22 Marks)
3. Clearly show how the relationship that existed among “the three successive age-groups”
of East African poets writing in English was interdependent. (20 Marks)
4. a). State why song of Lawino (Okot p’Bitek) serves as a milestone and testimony of success
in East African Literary Consciousness. (10 Marks)
b). P’Bitek bemoans what translation of his poem from Lwoo Language to English and now
Kiswahili. Discuss why this is so. (10 Marks)
SECTION B – POETRY (ANSWER AT LEAST ONE QUESTION FROM THIS
SECTION)
5. Giving Examples of particular states and Kingdoms discuss the existence of traditional drama in
East Africa before the advent of European colonialism. (20 Marks)
6. Give an account of how European colonizers used drama as one of the colonizing agents.

7. a). Examine the relationship between Nankya and Bwogo in the The floods (Raganda)
and show the factors which complicate this relationship. (22 marks)

b). Clearly analyse Ruganda’s use of Nyamgotho’s Narrative in The floods to portray
the plight of women in Africa. (20 marks)
8. a). Show how Francis Imbuga deals with the theme of betrayal through the characters
in Betrayal in the city. (10 marks)
b). Compare and contrast any two forms of betrayals in this play to any current betrayal
in our society today. (10 marks)
