SECTION A (40 Marks)
1. Describe and illustrate the Nitrogen cycle. (6 marks)

2. (a) Explain using equations the chemical processes for the formation of inorganic particulates
in the atmosphere? (4 marks)
(b) Summarize four methods in which inorganic particulates can be controlled. (4 marks)
3. (a) Describe briefly the major pollutants associated with gasoline use and the impact on the
environment. (4 marks)
(b) Brieflyexplain two methods which can be used to control carbon monoxide gas (CO)
from automobile exhaust. (2 marks)
(c) Illustrate the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide gas. (2 marks)
4. (a) Describe the photochemical reactions of (i) SO2 gas (ii) NO gas (3 marks)
(b) Explain using equations the formation of ozone gas in the atmosphere? (2 marks)
(c) Explain with aid of equations the importance of ozone gas and how it can be depleted
by gaseous pollutants. (4 marks)
5. (a) Describe briefly on two main pollutants of water (3 marks)
(b) Explain using appropriate examples why radiation rays are considered to be pollutants?
(6 marks)

6. Discuss the sources of four major metallic and two major inorganic trace elements present in
polluted water and their effect to human life. (10 marks)
7. Discuss the industrial manufacture of sulphuric acid by contact process and its effect to the
environment (10 marks)
8. Discus on green house effect and its contribution to global warming. (10 marks)
