1. (a) With close reference to any play covered in this course, explain the relationship
between language and literature. Focus n five illustrated points. [15 Marks]
(b) Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow.
They Ran Out of Mud
There is a little hut
Built across fro here;
They’ve mudded two walls
And the rest stands unmade…
For they ran out of mud.
There is deep gully
Running along the road;
They have fitted it halfway
And the rest is still gaping…
For they ran out of mud.
There is a pot by the altar
That they began to mould;
They finished the base
But the neck remains undone…
For they ran out of mud.
Mud! Mud!
Who can find mud?
May be if it were gold
Someone would.
(i) Name two things that remained unfinished because “they ran out of mud.” [1 Mark]

(ix) Identify three poetic devices used in the poem. [3 Marks]
2. Assess the effectiveness of the technique of satire as used by V.S Naipaul in the book, Miguel Street. Focus on any three sketches from the text. [20 Marks]
3. Evaluate Chinua Achebe’s Novel, Arrow of God to show the effectiveness of the author’s use of stylo-rhetoric devices. [20 Marks]
4. Identify and explain the significance of any five lexico-semantic deviations used by Grace Ogot in the short story, Tekayo. [20 Marks]
5. Explain and clearly illustrate five significances of the title of Franz Kafka’s short story, Metamorphosis.
