1. Describe the following terms:
a. Expository preaching (2 Mks)
b. Sermon idea (2 Mks)
c. The Logical context (2 Mks)
d. The Golden rule of interpretation (2 Mks)
e. The Law of double reference (2 Mks)
2. A good sermon outline is a precondition to developing an effective expository sermon.
a. Highlight any five guiding principles you will keep in mind when developing your
sermon outline. (5 Mks)
b. Explain with relevant examples any five supporting materials you would use to
amplify, explain, prove or apply your main points to make them understandable and
persuasive. (10Mks)
3. Expository preaching is based on good interpretation, which is achieved by in-depth inductive
Bible study. Discuss the five steps of inductive Bible study as discussed in class that you
would use to study a passage of scripture. In your discussion, clearly indicate what question
each step raises, what is covered in each step and the goal of each step.

4. Biographical sermons add variety in our preaching.
a. State any three reasons why you would opt to preach a biographical sermon
(3 Mks)
b. How would you go about preparing a biographical sermon? (7 Mks)
c. Describe any five pitfalls a preacher may fall into when preparing or delivering a
biographical sermon. (5 Mks)
5. You have been invited to train elders in your church on the process of speech preparation.
Prepare a teaching outline you would use in your training clearly highlighting the sequential
steps one must follow in preparing an expository sermon. (15Mks)
6. Construct an expository textual sermon from Matthew 22:37. Clearly show your exegetical
idea and outline, and your sermon idea, purpose and sermon outline. In your sermon outline
indicate the various things you will say under that point. The text (in italics) is provided here
below as it appears within its context:
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of
them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the
greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: ³µLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second
is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on
these two commandments.” (15Mks)
