Answer all questions.
1. Differentiate between oxidative phosphorylation and substrate level phosphorylation.
[4 marks]
2. Explain two basic ways of controlling metabolic pathway enzymes. [6 marks]
3. Parathyroid hormone originates from the parathyroid gland just below the thyroid gland. Calcitronin hormone originates from the ultimobronchial bodies just below the parathyroid gland. Clearly explain the evolutionary advantage of the close association between parathyroid hormone and calcitonin. [10 marks]
4. Discuss why ruminant animals on oral antibiotics require vitamin supplementation.
[5 marks]
5. Ruminant animals feed on cellulosic feedstuffs due to ruminal breakdown of cellulose to volatile fatty acids (acetic, propionate, butyrate) and methane.
(a) Using a flow diagram, clearly explain the conversion of cellulose to the volatile fatty acids and methane. [15 marks]
(b) Clearly show the conversion of propionate absorbed from the rumen to glucose in the liver. [5 marks]
6. Discuss the biochemical functions of Vitamin E and Selenium showing their interaction and deficiency signs. [5 marks]
