INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer all questions.
1. Explain why the designation ‘futile cycle’ is a misnomer. [5 marks]
2. Glycolysis is not the major energy producing pathway in metabolism. Explain.
[5 marks]
3. Discuss why ruminant animals on oral antibiotics require vitamin supplementation.
[5 marks]
4. Parathyroid hormone originates from the parathyroid gland just below the thyroid gland.
Calcitonin hormone originates from the ultimobronchial bodies just below the
parathyroid gland. Clearly explain the evolutionary advantage of the close association
between parathyroid hormone and calcitonin. [10 marks]
5. Ruminant animals feed on cellulosic feedstuffs due to ruminal breakdown of cellulose to
volatile fatty acids (acetic, propionate, butyrate) and methane.
(a) Using a flow diagram, clearly explain the conversion of cellulose to the volatile fatty
acids and methane. [15 marks]

(b) Clearly show the conversion of propionate absorbed from the rumen to glucose in the
liver. [10 marks]
6. Discuss the biochemical functions of Vitamin E and Selenium showing their interaction
and deficiency signs. [5 marks]
7. Describe the tricarboxylic acid cycle, clearly showing enzymes involved in every
reaction. [15 marks]
