QUESTION ONE (40 MARKS) COMPULSORY
(a) Explain the meaning of following terms
i. Proxy Server
ii. Pinging
iii. CSMA/CA
iv. CRC
v. Hybrid topology (10mks)

(b) Distinguish between
i. Modulation and demodulation
ii. CDMA and GSM
iii. Cracker and hacker (6mks)

(b) A network security system may not be all that effective without an effective
security policy. State any six security policy goals (3mks)

(c) Differentiate between a hub and a repeater (4mks)

(d) An 8KB document takes 2 milliseconds to be transmitted across a network. What
is the throughput of the network? (4mks)

(e) The IP address 10101101.00010101.10101101.00010101 was assigned to a
network node by a student.
i. Give four examples of network nodes (2mks)

ii. Convert each part of the IP address to a decimal number and write down
the full address in dotted decimal value (5mks)
iii. Identify the network class, network id, host id and correct sub netting
(4mks)
iv. Explain why it is not advisable to assign this IP address to a network node
(2mks)

(a) Distinguish between baud rate and throughput (2mks)

(b) Explain the effect of using each the following mode of transmissions in networks
i. circuit switching
ii. multicast
iii. synchronous
iv. broadband (8mks)

(c) Describe the three types of signal flaws giving the remedies of each (6mks)

(d) A document is supposed to take 0.1 seconds in the absence of system delays,
to be downloaded by a 230k modem. What is the size of the document in KB if
the system has a system delay of 3 seconds? (4mks)


QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS) ELECTIVE
(a) Explain any three functions of a network protocol (3mks)

(b) A transmitting station A that uses ASCII coding system sends out the message
Dad! to station B that also uses ASCII coding system.
i. Determine the block checksum at station A. (5mks)

ii. The block checksum obtained in B is 01100000. Is there an error
in transmitting the massage? Explain (4mks)

(c) For each of these four network issues: NIC, SNMP, ASCII and ATM,
i. Write their names in full (2mks)

ii. Explain their functions in networking (4mks)

iii. State the OSI reference model layer they operate at (2mks)


QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS) ELECTIVE
(a) Name four network devices that a gateway can be found in (2mks)

(b) Compare and contrast network switches and bridges (5mks)

(c) Most networks use dynamic routing. Explain (3mks)

(d) Assuming that the routers O, P, Q, R, S, T and U are in a given network segment.
The routing table below shows the routing information about information from
router O to various destination routers.

(a) Distinguish between physical and logical network topologies (2mks)

(b) A learning institution wishes to set up a network in a computer laboratory to
connect computers, a server and a printer with a switch.
i. Which topologies among star, ring, bus and hybrids fits this
scenario? (1mk)

ii. Explain five reasons for your choice (5mks)

iii. Explain three disadvantages for using the topology you
chose in (i) above (3mks)

(c) For each of the following three network technologies; Ethernet, token passing
and FDDI
i. Explain their functionalities (6mks)

ii. The most suitable topology that each uses (3mks)
