Exam Year:2009

COURSE CODE: COMP 461
COURSE TITLE: INTERNETWORKING WITH TCP/IP
STREAM: Y4S1
INSTRUCTIONS:
§ Answer ALL questions in SECTION A and ANY TWO in SECTION B.
§ Indicate question numbers clearly at the top of each page.
§ Observe further instructions on the answer booklet.
SECTION A ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION
QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a)
(i) Distinguish between a “local´ and a “remote´ computer in a network [2 marks]
(ii) Using an appropriate example explain how you can determine whether two computers
are local or remote to each other in a network [5marks]
b) Discuss 4 challenges to Internetworking [8 marks]
c) Your users want to access the company’s intranet from their homes. Explain the methods
available to provide this access? [4 marks]
d) You want to provide fast internet access to the users in your intranet so that the rate of
receiving data is much higher than the rate of sending data. Explain the method that will
enable you to provide this access. [3 marks]
e) The OSI model provides a conceptual framework for communication between computers, but
the model itself is not a method of communication. Actual communication is made possible
by using communication protocols. In the context of data networking, a protocol is a formal
set of rules and conventions that governs how computers exchange information over a
network medium. A protocol implements the functions of one or more of the OSI layers.
Explain the functions of the following communication protocols and state the OSI layer at
which they operate [8 marks]
I.) LAN protocols:
II.) WAN protocols:
III.) Routing protocols:
IV.) Network protocols:
SECTION B ANSWER ANY TWO QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION
QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) List at least FOUR physical layer implementation technologies for [4 marks]
i. LAN
ii. WAN
b) software application in System A has information to transmit to a software application in
System B. Explain how this information will pass through the OSI layers of the two systems
to the user of system B. [6 marks]
c) With respect to ISO Hierarchy of Networks state the meaning of the following terms giving
appropriate examples [4 marks]
i. End system (ES) network device:
ii. Intermediate system (IS) network device
d) In view of ISO Hierarchy of Networks distinguish between
i. Intradomain and interdomain intermediate system (IS) networks [2 marks]
ii. Autonomous system (AS) network and an area [4 marks]
QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)
a) Identify THREE commonly used internetwork addresses [3 marks]
b) Explain the role of each of the internetwork address identified above [6 marks]
c) Distinguish between static and dynamic internetwork addresses [3 marks]
d) Internetwork devices usually have both a name and an address associated with them Explain
why it is convenient to use internetwork names. [3 marks]
e) Your network has expanded from several computers to several hundred computers, and users
are complaining that the network is slow. You do not have the budget to upgrade the cabling
or to change the type of network, so you choose to divide the network into segments to
increase the data throughput on each segment. You want to do this without making any
changes to the computers on the network.
i. State the network component that you can use to achieve this [1 mark ]
ii. Give FOUR reasons to explain your answer [4 marks]
QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a) Identify THREE methods commonly used by different protocol suites to determine the MAC
address of a device stating how each method achieves the desired results. [6 marks]
b) Which includes more overhead, connection-oriented or connectionless services? Explain
[3 marks]
c) Subnetting provides the network administrator with several benefits
i. What is subnetting? [2 marks]
ii. State any THREE benefits of subnetting [3 marks]
d)
i. Given a class B address 176.16.0.0 that specifies 11 bits of subnetting compute the
following [3 marks]
I.) Subnet mask
II.) Number of subnets
III.) Number of hosts per subnet
ii. Given a class C address 192.168.2.0 that specifies 4 bits of subnetting compute the
following [3 marks]
I.) Subnet mask
II.) Number of subnets
III.) Number of hosts per subnet
QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) Explain how you can test whether a computer is communication with other computers on the
network [2 marks]
b) Your computer is not communicating with other computers on the network and you need to
view the IP address information outline two methods that you can use to view this
information and for each method, you can do [5 marks ]
c) Outline the SIX core protocols provided in the TCP/IP suite stating the use of each [6 marks]
d) Identify THREE elements that make up a socket and explain the use of a socket to TCP/IP
[5 marks]
e) Explain the use of the tracert utility [2 marks]
