INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer ALL questions in section A and TWO from section B.
Section A: answer all questions
(i) Define the term “conflict” and give an example of any conflict situation that you have a witnessed recently. [10 Marks]
(ii) Any society which is organized so that some people are treated unequally and unjustly is likely to erupt into conflict, especially if its leaders don’t represent all the members of that society. Use this sentence to explain the difference between Triggers and Underlying causes of conflict. [5 Marks]
(iii) Discuss five causes of conflict and provide a relevant example to illustrate your answer. [5 Marks]
(iv) “Conflict is bad and need to be avoided”. Discuss this statement by giving two negative and three positive views of conflicts. [10 Marks]
Section B: answer any two questions
2. “ In our home, conflict was avoided or denied at all costs, so I grew up without seeing conflict managed in a satisfactory way, I felt that conflict was somehow bad and would never be resolved. This experience fit well with the reward of being a “good” girl (accommodating others), which combined to make a pattern for me in which I was not even sensitive to wishes and disires that might lead to conflict”.
(a) With regard to this statement from a female student discuss the disadvantages of accommodation as a conflict management style and explain to the student other four styles of conflict management by giving their strength and weakness.

3. Briefly describe a conflict you are familiar with and point out how the “parties” have engaged in the conflict using the following headings. [20 Marks]
(i) An expressed struggle
(ii) Differences in goals
(iii) Interdependence between the parties
(iv) Perceived scarce resources
(v) Interference.
4. Discuss the impact of violent conflict by providing relevant examples from Kenya. [20 Marks]
