Course:Bachelor Of Science In Biochemistry

Institution: Egerton University question papers

Exam Year:2007

UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS

SECOND SEMESTER 2006/2007

FOURTH YEAR EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOCHEMISTRY

BIOC 404: METABOLIC REGULATION and INTERGRATION

TIME:2 HRS

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Attempt ALL questions.

SECTION A-(15 Marks each)

1.Describe the reciprocal controls which ensure that fatty acids are either synthesized or oxidized but not both at the same time.

2.(a) What is translational frameshift?

(b) Describe the frameshift mechanism used for the regulation of the protein release factor 2 (RF2) required for termination of protein synthesis in E.coli.

(c) What are suppressor tRNAs and how do they restore normal functioning of mutated genes?

SECTION B-(10 Marks each)

3.Discuss the strategies cells take in regulating lipogenesis during high glucose levels.

4.(i) In the presence of saturating amounts of oxaloacetate, the activity of citrate synthesis from pig heart shows a sigmoid dependence against the concentration of acetyl-CoA.When succinyl-CoA is added, the curve becomes even more sigmoid. On the basis of this observations:

(a) Explain how succinyl-CoA regulates citrate synthase.

(b) Why is succinyl-CoA an appropriate signal for the regulation of the citric acid cycle?

(c) How does the regulation of citrate synthase control the rate of Cellular respiration inpig heart tissue?

(ii) How and why do the levels of AMP and Ca2+ affect the rate of glycogenolysis?

5.Discuss the regulation of glycolytic pathway.

6.(a) What does the term "Post translational mRNA editing" refer to?

(b) Describe RNA editing in the gene for the apolipoprotein B of the Low density lipoprotein (LDL).
